Your Desk is home to innovative and forward-thinking companies, like Milray Park – Australia’s home of eDecorating.
Who are you?
My name is Sally and I founded Milray Park, Australia’s home of eDecorating. My colleague Noemie (Milray Park Digital Marketing Manager) and I both work on Level 1 at Your Desk on Clarence.
What does Milray Park do?
Milray Park is an online interior design platform where you can connect and work with a designer 100% online to get a professionally designed space for one flat-fee price.
So, how did Milray Park start out?
I had just moved into a new (rental) apartment and was looking to finally resolve the ‘hotchpotch full of random stuff’ look I had going on at home. I wanted my place to feel home-y and occasionally, be able to have people over.
At the time, I was working long hours and had limited free time. My appetite for trawling the net or spending my weekends at the Supacenta looking for stuff *I thought* may go together, was really low. Not to mention that I frequently found myself crippled with indecision over what was the RIGHT shade of beige for a couch. Oatmeal vs sand. WTF. Yes I am a loser, but seriously I think that colour indecisiveness should be included in the DSM-V. Who else?!
So what do you do, when you don’t know what to do? You Google. Finally, I found a handful of interior designers who offered their services all online. I just thought, what a fantastic concept. It all started from there.
Who are your biggest influences?
The majority of my biggest influences are strong female role models:
Nigella Lawson, apart from her sublime cooking, most people don’t realise that she is an incredible communicator and editor.
Gail Kelly, warm, articulate and an effective leader. I used to work at Westpac, so maybe I am slightly biased.
Anna Wintour, yes, she is the Devil in Prada, but an impressive power broker, and has consistently fostered emerging creative talent and industry innovation (both in the media and in fashion). Being able to contribute value not only from a customer perspective, but from a wider industry perspective. Pretty cool.
…And your favourite designer?
Is that a bit like asking who is your favourite child? We pre-vet each Milray Park designer for a few things. Fundamentally, a designer not only has to be creatively talented, they have to possess a high degree of personal warmth to be a part of Milray Park. It’s easy for me to say that I genuinely think they’re all fantastic.
What is still your biggest challenge?
Prioritisation. What is the priority today?
What tools do you find indispensable for your day-to-day?
Airtable (thank you Trung from Mobiusly (Level 3) for that one).
Memo on my phone, for recording my streams of consciousness so I can get on with priorities.
Youfoodz so I don’t have to cook or eat my boyfriend’s ‘meals’.
The Gmail undo send button.
Have you ever received any great advice that’s stuck with you?
“Show up.” – so underestimated but a fundamental one.
“Sleep on it.” – always proved to be a good one for tough decisions.
And one that I really like, and that I am working on, is building an effective group of advisors – people you can turn to when making tough decisions. I guess as you evolve, the people who are best placed to add value, change at each stage. Developing the list and nurturing those relationships does require a lot of energy, but more than worthwhile.
What’s one thing that you never expected to end up doing as part of running Milray Park?
Finding Sydney digs for a big U.S. pop star.
If you were stuck on a desert island (and power supply wasn’t an issue!), what book/podcast/blog would you want to have with you?
Any autobiography on American early 20th Century industrialists.
Hard Choices, Hilary Clinton (has been on my list forever).
What keeps you up at night?
Generally I sleep pretty well.
